I have kvetched before about our tiny kitchen. But if the biggest problem I have is a lack of counter space, I should probably shut my pie hole. And no matter how small your kitchen is, you can stock it with American made utensils and tools. Here are some companies that know their way around the kitchen.
Before you can cook much of anything in the kitchen, you have to do some cutting. Dexas makes a wide range of wonderful cutting boards in its Texas plant to protect your marble/granite/concrete/lava countertops. Dexas also makes chargers and rugged clipboards.
My favorite American knife company is Lamsom Goodnow, but Rada also makes some pretty snazzy cutlery. Rada knives have been made since 1948 by members of our extended American family living and working in Waverly, Iowa. A few of the best-selling Rada knives are their paring knife, and their serrated steak knives.
Want a spatula for your non-stick pans that is not made in the Middle Kingdom? Rada makes those too.
Rada also has a lot of beautiful packages of knives and if you get really excited about Rada you can sell them to earn money for your group or charity. Once you know about Rada, there is simply no need to buy kitchen tools not made on our shores.
If you are into baking or desserts, you need to have a good whisk on hand in the kitchen. I recently read about Best Manufacturers, the pride and joy of the Merrifield family. John and Glennis Merrifield, and their son Kyle, run Best which has been making whisks in Portland, OR for the last 53 years. According to the Merrifields, theirs is the last U.S. whisk manufacturer left standing. If you want to learn more about the Merrifields and their wonderful company, click on this link. I plan to purchase a Best U.S. made French whip (I know, it’s slightly confusing) for my sauces, and a Best Balloon whip for my soufflés.
No matter which kitchen tools you purchase from Dexas, Rada or Best Manufacturing, you will definitely be getting a twofer: you will have tools that will allow you to be the best cook you can be and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your purchase helped provide employment for a member of our extended American family who will use his or her paycheck to put food on the table in their home.
Now let’s eat!
