Tick Tock

While members of our extended American family produce almost anything we would need to buy for our home and our immediate family, there are a few areas where American made options are few and far between.  American made TVs were a oximoron until the Element Electronics Company recently announced that they will begin making TVs in Detroit later this year.  Another problem area is wrist watches.

There is a rich history of American wrist watch manufacturing.  Wrist watches first became popular as the result of the military officers needing to know precisely when to kick off the “big push” in order to have tens of thousands of soldiers march very slowly toward the opposing forces machine gun nests.  Famous American manufacturers included Gruen, Elgin, Waltham Watch Co. and Hamilton.  None of those manufacturers still make watches in this country.  If you want an American made watch these days, the firm you need to know is the RGM Watch Company

RGM Watch Company was founded in 1992 by American watchmaker Roland G. Murphy in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  The watches this American company makes are amazing, but you are not going to be picking them up at your nearest Target, take my word for it.  These watches will be passed down from generation to generation.  Click on the link to read a very interesting interview with Mr. Murphy.

Devon Works

The next time I hit the lottery, I will officially be in the market for a Devon Works’ Tread Watch.  This watch is very cool.

However, I am afraid that while cool, the Trend is simply not in my price range.  Still, I am happy to know that watches are being made on our shores.  If any reader knows of any other American watch makers that are in operation these days, please let me know.  Oh, is that the time?  I gotta go!
