Filson is old school. That is not to say they are old-fashioned. Rather, they are a Seattle company that has been manufacturing premier quality outdoor wear in my home town for the past 114 years. If you want gear that will keep you warm and dry on any outdoor adventure, I advise you to load up on Filson gear.
Filson was founded in Seattle in 1897 by Clinton C. Filson, an immigrant from Ohio. Mr. Filson’s business timing was impeccable. In July of 1897, the Great Klondike Gold rush officially started and Mr. Filson did a tidy business outfitting potential millionaires heading up to the tender mercies of the Yukon, where winter temperatures dropped to -80 degrees Fahrenheit. By 1902, Filson had branched out into also providing clothing for loggers beginning to thin the great forests of the Pacific Northwest.
As the new century arrived, Filson’s focus evolved. While continuing to provide quality outdoor clothing to Americans who had to work outdoors for a living, Filson began to provide tough yet comfortable clothing to people who ventured outdoors not to work, but to hunt and fish. Just as earlier, Filson guaranteed every piece of merchandise they sold.
Filson’s approach has always been to manufacture outdoor clothing and other merchandise using the best materials and classic designs. When you visit Filson’s retail shop attached to their manufacturing plant in Seattle, you will not find Gortex® shells or fleece jackets. Instead you will find Filson’s Oil Finish Tin Cloth Jackets and 100% Virgin wool shirts, sweaters and Mackinaw Cruiser jackets. This outdoor wear will keep you warm and dry under virtually any circumstance you might find yourself in. Most of these amazing garments are produced by Filson’s workforce in its Seattle Factory.
In addition to its outdoor wear, Filson also manufactures virtually indestructible luggage. Filson’s luggage is created from 22 oz per yard Twill which is soaked in a proprietary paraffin based wax that renders it very water-repellent. Filson’s luggage and bags are manufactured with brass zippers and full-grain vegetable-tanned Bridle Leather. As with most of its outdoor wear, most of Filson’s luggage is manufactured in its Seattle factory.
If you are in the market for classic, high quality, fully guaranteed outdoor wear and luggage, you need look no farther that Seattle’s historic Filson brand. And if you live or are visiting the Seattle area, make a plan to visit their factory store. They are truly an iconic Seattle manufacturer.
